If you're reading this journal, it's because you're looking for links to Phrazes for the Young.
I decided to take them down. I don't want to fuck with Jules' record sales. That'd be a dick move against one of my favorite musicians of all time.
Whether online file-sharing of music hurts the artist or actually helps them is for you to decide. Personally, I believe it helps most artists in the long run, but it's not for me to decide how Jules' wants to release his music.
The below video is an interesting study on Nine Inch Nails, who has released their last two albums under Creative Commons licenses, which allow them to be shared online freely. Feel free to discuss.

Intellectualizing our feelings is something we do all the time. Such as when we tell someone "I am angry with you" without showing that angry. The expression of genuine feeling is often inconvenient in the "social" world we work and play. So, early in life, we learn to make an instant little examination of each feeling and impulse to make sure it is socially appropriate. We learn to squelch it if it's not. Over time we create a social mask. It becomes habitual, an emotional armor that's eventually embedded in our bodies and manifested through body language. Soon we are "in our heads," or "not in touch with our feelings." Emotion becomes an idea rather than an experience.
For example, when a child suppresses anger towards his parents, his love for his parents becomes only partly an expression of genuine feeling. As he grows up, it becomes an idea of something he is supposed to feel. Living out of touch with feelings eventually causes a chronic condition which feelings are avoided, especially unpleasant ones like fear, pain, and anger. Attitude replaces feeling. Depression (the suppression of the unpleasant feelings) becomes epidemic. |

Just got back from a Free Culture meeting. Apparently the reason Take Back NYU had so many random, disjointed demands was because, originally, their only demand was disclosure of the budget, but in order to gain more support and members, they adopted the demands of other NYU groups who said they would support TBNYU. This just made TBNYU a really awkward umbrella organization for a lot of non-related issues.
Also, I found out that the topless girls outside Kimmel were topless to represent transparency. ...Yeah. Case closed. |
